CHAPTER TWELVE
The tension in Judeâs shoulders was so tight you could bounce a coin off them. He and the team had been watching the front door of Chan Yuâs building for the last hour, and thereâd been no movement at all. Not even a client that had walked in or out.
The one person they wanted to see walk out hadnât either. Chris Swanson, the contact Steve had, held Siennaâs life in his hands. If anything happened to her, Jude wasnât going to be responsible for what he did to the other man.
âWhat the hell is going on? Why is it taking so long?â He drummed his fingers on the table. He should be used to waiting.
How many times had he had to wait for action to happen on a mission?
Too many to count, and he didnât have a problem there. This was different though. This was more personal. This mission involved Sienna and his sister.
âThis is a good sign, mate.â Andy pointed his water bottle at the building. âIf theyâd walked out two minutes after theyâd walked in, then weâd have a problem. Trust Chris. He knows what heâs doing. Heâs solid.â
As much as he wanted to believe Andy, he didnât know Chris and had only briefly meet him after they arrived. He didnât have a chance to sit down and have a good talk to him. âHow did you guys know him?â
Andy pressed his lips together, as if he didnât want to say anything. It did nothing to ease the tension inside of Jude, if anything it made it worse. After a few moments he nodded as though heâd reached a decision to let Jude in on a little that was the mystery of Chris Swanson. âLetâs just say when we needed it, heâs helped us out on numerous occasions. Heâs never let us down once. Iâd trust him with my life. He knows what heâs doing, and heâs very good at his job.â
âRight.â As hard as it might be, Jude had to trust what Andy was saying. This group of guys had worked together for years. It was why heâd contacted them in the beginning. Of course, they wouldâve made connections with people from other agencies or other security groups.
Being here, the hunger to get back into doing the type of things heâd done when heâd been in the Army had returned. He did miss the adrenaline rush of jumping out of a plane to land in the designated drop zone. To be in the thick of things when taking down their target. While this mission had some of those elements, it didnât have all of them.
And as much as heâd love to get back into it, he couldnât. His responsibilities had changed.
Jude sat a little straighter as the door opened, and Chris walked outâalone.
A mixture of being happy and pissed off coursed through himâSienna was in.
God, Sienna was in.
The reality hit him harder than he thought it would. He wanted to race into that building and pull her out.
